School restrooms are usually pretty quiet until the bell rings. Then, in the five minutes between classes, there’s a mad dash of students rushing in, trying to complete their business and not be late for their next class.
In addition, students know these spaces are one of a few not monitored by video cameras, so restrooms can become spots for vandalism, graffiti, fights, and other unhealthy pursuits. Designing for reasonable privacy while avoiding student seclusion is a difficult balance.
Architects have to design a space that can handle short, intense bursts of wear and tear and meet the unique needs of the student body while staying within tight budget constraints of a public project.
They may be tempted to specify the cheapest school washroom partitions, but doing so means the school district may face additional maintenance costs or may have to replace the partitions much sooner than expected. It also leaves the restroom in an observable state of decay. That’s not a great legacy to leave behind, and ends up having a much higher long-term cost.
It’s important to pick the right partitions that can survive the realities of student life while balancing these three priorities: durability, safety, and age-appropriate student privacy. The long-term value is another consideration that will impact the school budget over the course of 5-20 years, depending on the partitions selected.
What School Restrooms Demand from Partitions
The biggest challenge architects face when designing a school restroom is staying within the district’s budget, which is often limited. For schools, long-term performance that minimizes repair, maintenance, and frequent replacement expenses is particularly desirable.
The needs of each project depend highly on the students and location. Kindergartners and younger students may feel safer knowing someone can see them. But as they age into middle and high school, architects have to balance the students’ right to privacy with the school’s need to eliminate blind spots.

Proof in the Field: Strasburg High School, 20 Years On

Privacy: The New Baseline for Student Restrooms

Even in traditional gender-segregated restrooms, standard partitions can fail to give students the privacy they need to feel safe. Visible sightlines through doors and stile gaps create discomfort, peer surveillance, and anxiety. Optional occupancy indicators can be used on the door hardware so no one is trying to look inside or knocking and pushing on doors.
Although it is unlikely for schools to install floor-to-ceiling partitions for students, both for safety and budgetary reasons, maintaining privacy is still critical. School districts can achieve high privacy in both traditional single-gender restrooms and newer all-gender spaces by specifying gapless partitions with zero sightlines above the feet.
Zero-Sightline Design: Heights, Gaps, & Hardware
To give all students privacy and dignity in the washroom, zero-sightline partitions have doors, panels, and stiles that fit together to form completely flush surfaces.
Because zero-sightline designs use taller and heavier materials, the hardware must be upgraded for durability, smooth operation, and aesthetics:
- Concealed and heavy-duty mountings: These partitions often use concealed stainless steel fasteners and heavy-duty, full-height stainless steel brackets.
- Advanced closing mechanisms: Built-in hydraulic soft-close mechanisms (sometimes hidden in the headrail or pivot foot) ensure that the heavy oversized doors close smoothly and quietly.
Elementary schools can also consider specialized kiddie stalls, which are shortened floor-anchored partitions purposefully designed with reduced sightline gaps, but adults can check in on the children if needed.
But schools can’t eliminate the toe gap in every stall. On the required ADA compartment, the 2010 ADA Standards require the vertical toe clearance beneath the front partition and one side partition to be 12 inches for children, which is higher than the 9-inch requirement for adults. In the newer 2017 ICC Standards, the minimum 12-inch vertical toe clearance applies universally to both adults and children.
This toe clearance requirement can be waived entirely in children’s wheelchair-accessible compartments if the stall is greater than 67 inches long and 68 inches wide. In all restrooms, it is important that door hardware must be operable from the exterior with a specialized tool to provide access for first responders in case of an emergency. It is recommended to keep doors outswing when possible for this same reason. If a person has collapsed against an inswing door, it will take additional time for first responders to help them.
Gender-Inclusive & All-Gender School Restrooms
Some school districts go above and beyond to ensure transgender individuals have safe, private restrooms that create an atmosphere of inclusivity and reduce their legal liability, especially in areas where these restrooms are required by law.
Vashon Island High School, just outside of Seattle, added DuraLineSeries Compact Grade Laminate partitions when renovating two single-gender bathrooms into two all-gender restrooms to support the school’s LGBTQ+ population. By providing gender-neutral washrooms, students do not have to explain or justify their bathroom use to anyone.
Universal Access: Designing for Every Student

Architects are faced with the challenge of designing school washrooms for universal access, especially for special needs students with sensory processing differences, temporary mobility limitations, or personal care needs.
Keeping the Seven Principles of Universal Design in mind, architects design for every student by creating washrooms that:
- Have partitions, ceiling tiles, and other materials that absorb sound, rather than bounce it back into the room
- Have a layout that’s easy to understand with plenty of room for wheelchairs and scooters to maneuver
- Have ample lighting in a warm color temperature that contributes to a soothing atmosphere
- Provide different height sinks for wheelchair users and people of short stature, as well as accessories, such as faucets, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers with both a right- and left-hand approach to accommodate different disabilities
- Use touchless accessories whenever possible to reduce effort of use
- Design large and easy to use entryways, preferably with out-swing doors
- Avoid sitelines from the public way into the restroom
Student Well-Being: Why Restroom Design Affects Attendance & Behavior
By designing washrooms that prioritize privacy, designers protect student well-being and health.
The Journal of Public Health’s 2026 study analyzed 38 studies across multiple countries, confirming that a vast majority of older children and adolescents actively avoid using school restrooms. Girls and LGBTQ+ youth were disproportionately affected by avoidance-related health consequences, the study found.
Common barriers to school toilet use included lack of privacy and peer surveillance. Avoidance behaviors were linked to:
- Urinary and gastrointestinal disorders
- Dehydration
- Psychological distress
- Academic difficulties
This is a serious issue that designers and school administration have the power to improve.
Affordability: Balancing Budget, Durability, & Privacy
